Leucoderma, known as "Shvitra" in Ayurveda, is a skin disorder characterized by the development of white patches on the skin due to the loss of skin pigment, melanin. These patches, also known as Vitiligo, can occur on any part of the body and may gradually spread over time. In Ayurveda, the condition is considered a "Kilasa" or a disorder of the skin.
According to Ayurveda, the primary cause of Leucoderma is the aggravation of the Pitta and Kapha doshas, along with the impairment of Rakta (blood) and Mamsa (muscle) dhatus (tissues) in the body. The imbalanced doshas lead to a reduction in the production of melanin, resulting in the appearance of white patches on the skin.
Ayurveda views Leucoderma as a manifestation of internal imbalances, and therefore, the treatment approach focuses on correcting these imbalances and purifying the blood.
Prevalence of Vitiligo in India
On the basis of few dermatological outpatient records, the incidence of Vitiligo in India is found to be 0.25%-2.5%.
What are the symptoms of Leucoderma?
Signs and symptoms of Leucoderma include:
- Patches of skin or mucous membranes that lose color. These can appear white or lighter than your natural skin tone.
- Patches of hair on your body turn silver, grey or white.
Symptoms can be mild and only affect a small area of your body or severe and affect a large area of your skin. Some people with Vitiligo experience itchy skin before de-pigmentation starts.
Leucoderma may begin as small patches in the skin. With time, these enlarge and merge with other patches over several months. Although they can crop up in any part of the body, the initial patches are usually on the hands, forearms, feet, and face.
